Manisa Municipality launches cold storage project for beekeepers

Manisa Metropolitan Municipality has launched the ‘Honeycomb Preservation and Protection Project’ to assist local beekeepers in combating the greater wax moth. The initiative utilizes a container-type cold storage facility established in the Hıroğlu neighborhood of the Gölmarmara district.

Under the project, harvested honeycombs will be shock-treated at minus 30 degrees Celsius. This process is designed to eliminate the greater wax moth, as well as its larvae, pupae, and eggs, thereby preserving the combs for reuse in subsequent seasons. By using extreme cold, the municipality aims to eliminate the need for chemical treatments, reducing the risk of honey residue and ensuring a healthier production process.

The service will be provided to beekeepers with 100 percent grant support. Once the shocking, packaging, and storage processes are complete, the combs will be returned to the owners, helping to reduce costs associated with purchasing new equipment and minimizing production losses.
