Manisa Spatial Future Symposium addresses urban planning and industry-agriculture balance

The Manisa Metropolitan Municipality held the Manisa Central Spatial Future Symposium on October 26-27 to discuss the city's long-term development through a scientific lens. The event brought together academics, experts, and public officials to address urban planning, the preservation of natural resources, and the relationship between planning decisions and the public interest.

During the opening, Metropolitan Municipality Secretary General Burak Deste noted that Manisa has lacked a comprehensive master development plan since 1989 due to continuous cancellations of previous planning attempts. He highlighted the challenges posed by rapid industrial growth and the demographic shifts caused by white-collar workers residing in neighboring İzmir, which impacts local traffic and housing markets.

The symposium emphasized that industry and agriculture are not alternatives but rather “two strong pillars” supporting the city's future. Discussions focused on protecting the soil and water resources of the Gediz Basin against climate change and industrial pressure, as well as managing spatial conflicts and legal aspects of public interest.
