Manish Tewari opposes proposed Delimitation Bill
Congress MP Manish Tewari has expressed strong opposition to the proposed Delimitation Bill and the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, arguing that the redistribution of parliamentary seats could disadvantage North India, South India, and the Northeast.
Tewari contended that the delimitation process would disproportionately benefit Central India while potentially undermining the political weight and regional representation of states located along international borders. He emphasized that the strategic and security importance of these border regions must be considered to maintain federal balance.
Regarding the implementation of the Women’s Reservation Act, 2023, Tewari argued that the government should not make women's reservation dependent on the delimitation process. He suggested that the one-third reservation for women should be applied immediately to the existing 543 Lok Sabha seats rather than waiting for the expansion of the house, which the proposed legislation seeks to achieve ahead of the 2029 general elections.
