Manitoba faces physician shortages and laboratory service concerns
Manitoba is seeing progress in general physician recruitment but continues to struggle with significant medical shortages and service disruptions. According to a report from Doctors Manitoba, the province now has 235 physicians per 100,000 residents, marking a 4.5 per cent increase from the previous year and approaching the national average.
Despite this growth, a shortage of 225 specialists accounts for 90 per cent of the province's overall doctor deficit. This shortage is linked to increased wait times for surgeries, tests, and consultations. Additionally, physicians have expressed significant concerns regarding patient access to diagnostic testing due to stalled labor negotiations at Dynacare.
Following a brief strike in September, Dynacare's 350 unionized laboratory workers have been without a contract since March 31. Doctors Manitoba reported that patients are encountering closures and long waits at facilities, which can impede critical diagnosis, treatment planning, and medication monitoring.
