Manitoba government expands autism strategy to include adults

The Manitoba government has announced it will no longer pursue a child-specific autism strategy, opting instead for a broader approach that includes adults. Families Minister Nahanni Fontaine stated that the government is rescinding amendments to a private member’s bill that had previously narrowed the scope of the legislation.

The Autism Strategy Act, introduced by Liberal MLA Cindy Lamoureux, requires the establishment of a provincewide strategy and annual progress reports. Lamoureux noted that many organizations and individuals emphasized the lack of existing services for those aged 18 and older, arguing that autism care must be lifelong.

Minister Fontaine explained that the government had initially focused on children following feedback from families regarding specific pediatric needs. However, after receiving more than 70 emails expressing concern over the narrow focus, the government committed to passing the act in its original form next week.
