Manitoba government installs safety upgrades at Sturgeon Falls after brothers' drowning

Two brothers, 10‑year‑old Maximo Au Ramirez and his 13‑year‑old sibling Aaron Au Ramirez, were swept away by fast‑moving waters at Sturgeon Falls in Whiteshell Provincial Park on July 18, 2026. Their bodies were recovered later in the water.

Environment and Climate Change Minister Mike Moyes announced that the Manitoba government will install fencing to block access to slippery rock areas, upgrade signage to warn of hidden rocks, strong currents and steep drop‑offs, and build fenced viewing platforms at the Sturgeon Falls Trail. The trail will stay closed until these measures are completed, and the province is reviewing safety upgrades for other locations in its park system.

Moyes said the actions are intended to prevent any other family from suffering a similar tragic loss.
