Manitoba introduces bill to improve cannabis store safety
The Manitoba government has introduced Bill 56, which proposes amendments to the Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Control Act to improve safety for cannabis store employees. A key component of the legislation would eliminate the mandatory requirement for window coverings that currently prevent the public from seeing into age-restricted stores. Proponents argue that increasing visibility from the street will ensure workers are not secluded from public view.
Additionally, the bill would grant the Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Authority of Manitoba the power to establish mandatory minimum staffing levels during specific hours. This measure aims to ensure employees are not working alone during periods identified as having a higher risk of violence. Justice Minister Matt Wiebe stated that the primary goal of the bill is to prioritize worker safety.
