Manitoba living wage exceeds minimum wage in several cities

A report from the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives reveals that Manitoba’s minimum wage is significantly lower than the required living wage in several cities. In Winnipeg, the living wage for 2026 is estimated at $20.31 per hour, nearly $4 more than the current minimum wage.

Other regional findings include a living wage of $17.40 in Brandon and $18.73 in Thompson. While Manitoba’s minimum wage is scheduled to increase by 40 cents—from $16 to $16.40—on October 1, residents expressed concerns that the rise is insufficient to cover increased expenses.

The report attributes the rising living wage requirements to higher food prices and transportation costs. Notably, the living wage calculation does not include provisions for retirement savings, education funds, or recreational spending.
