Manitoba man charged with manslaughter after fatal stabbing
In Manitoba, 41-year-old Gabriel Bighetty has been charged with manslaughter and assault with a weapon following a fatal stabbing in Pukatawagan. The incident occurred on October 9, 2026, when a 45-year-old man was found injured at a residence on Hunt Road. After being initially treated at a local health centre, the victim's condition deteriorated, and he later died at a hospital in The Pas.
Separately, in New Brunswick, the provincial government acknowledged a delay in reporting the death of an inmate. Pierre Dartiguenave, 50, was found unresponsive in his cell at the Saint John Regional Correctional Centre on October 7 and died in a hospital on October 10. While the Department of Justice and Public Safety has a policy to notify the public of deaths in custody within 12 hours, details were not released until four days later. A government spokesperson stated the department is reviewing the matter to prevent future delays.
