Manitoba waives sales tax to attract Port of Churchill investment

The Manitoba government has announced it will waive provincial sales tax on major capital spending for the Port of Churchill to attract international investment. Premier Wab Kinew made the announcement at an investment summit in Toronto, pitching the port alongside mining, infrastructure, and agriculture projects valued at over $85 billion.

The tax waiver is intended to support proposals for a new energy corridor, liquefied natural gas facilities, railway upgrades, and increased icebreaking capacity to facilitate year-round shipping. Recent data suggests receding ice levels are making Arctic shipping routes more accessible.

However, the proposed expansion faces environmental scrutiny. A University of Manitoba researcher warned that increased vessel traffic in the Churchill River estuary could disrupt beluga whale populations. The report suggests that noise from ships may impact the whales' migration, vocalization, and feeding habits, potentially affecting local tourism and communities that rely on the animals.
