Manitoba police officer cleared of charges after fatal dog shooting

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba has announced it will not recommend charges against a Manitoba First Nations Police Service officer who fatally shot a dog in June 2025.

The incident occurred at a home in Swan River First Nation while the officer was attempting to make an arrest. After being bitten by a dog chained outside the residence, the officer reportedly returned with a carbine rifle and shot the animal dead.

Following an investigation that began in July 2025, the Manitoba Prosecution Service reviewed the findings. While the Crown described the officer’s conduct as “concerning,” officials determined that available evidence did not support charges under the Criminal Code or the Animal Care Act.
