Manitoba RCMP investigates suspicious death of four-year-old

The Manitoba RCMP has launched a suspicious death investigation following the passing of a four-year-old girl at a home in Long Plain First Nation. Emergency responders arrived at the residence, located approximately 110 kilometres outside of Winnipeg, around 7:45 a.m. on August 9, 2026, after reports of a child in medical distress.

Two other young girls, aged one and two, were also found in the home with injuries. While one child was initially reported to be in critical condition, police confirmed that both toddlers are now in stable condition.

Due to the suspicious nature of the death and the injuries sustained by the other children, the RCMP Major Crime Services and Forensic Identification Services have taken over the investigation from the Manitoba First Nations Police Service. Superintendent Rob Lasson described the incident as “troubling” and noted that investigators are working alongside the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine the circumstances of the event.
