Manitoba Storm Triggers Widespread Flooding, Power Outages and Emergency Declarations

A massive thunderstorm system moved north from North Dakota into southern and western Manitoba, delivering record rainfall. Boissevain recorded 152 mm of rain, while five other communities, including Deloraine, Minto, Neepawa, Plumas and Rivers, each received more than 100 mm. Heavy downpours caused street flooding, basement inundations and sewer backups.

Wind gusts topped 106 km/h in Morden, with numerous towns reporting speeds of 80 km/h or higher. The high winds and rain knocked out electricity for over 14,000 Manitoba Hydro customers and downed trees across the Winnipeg area, prompting numerous emergency calls.

Municipalities responded by declaring states of emergency. Boissevain‑Morton and Deloraine‑Winchester ordered residents to conserve water, closed roads and cancelled upcoming Canada Day celebrations. Flooded homes required assistance from volunteers and the cleanup effort continues as officials assess damage and work to restore power and services.
