Manitoba to adopt permanent daylight saving time

Manitoba has announced it will adopt permanent daylight saving time, ending the practice of twice-annual clock adjustments. Premier Wab Kinew confirmed the decision following a public survey where 92% of approximately 72,000 respondents expressed a preference for a permanent time system. Of those surveyed, 58% supported staying on daylight time, while 34% favored permanent standard time.

The shift is expected to provide more evening light during winter months, which the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce noted is beneficial for the retail, dining, and agricultural sectors. While the decision aims to improve stability for families and businesses, some experts have raised concerns regarding the impact of later sunrises on sleep patterns and morning routines.

Manitoba joins several other Canadian jurisdictions that have already moved away from seasonal time changes, including British Columbia, Alberta, Yukon, the Northwest Territories, and Saskatchewan.
