Manitoba to launch childcare subsidy program for 3,000 families

The Manitoba provincial government is launching a childcare subsidy program on September 13 to reduce costs for approximately 3,000 families. The initiative targets children aged 12 weeks to 12 years, with eligibility determined by income, the number and age of children, and the required days of care.

Depending on eligibility, families can expect savings ranging from approximately $520 to $2,600 per child annually. Education and Early Childhood Learning Minister Tracy Schmidt stated the program aims to ensure financial stability for young families and improve access to high-quality licensed childcare.

Supported by a $1.8 million contribution from the federal government, Manitoba has committed to creating 10,000 new childcare spaces for children aged 0 to 6. Additionally, provincial investments have already opened 1,800 spaces for school-aged children since October 2023, with another 900 spaces expected to follow.
