Manizales Cathedral suffers severe damage after Colombia earthquake

A 7.4 magnitude earthquake in Colombia has caused severe structural damage to the Manizales Cathedral, a National Monument and Minor Basilica. The seismic event resulted in the collapse of one of the cathedral's towers, which fell against the nave, and the collapse of the dome.

Additional damage includes the detachment of a Christ figure from the central bell tower and deep cracks throughout various sections of the building. The earthquake also impacted several other historical temples in the regions of Cauca, Tolima, Valle, and Caldas.

Authorities are currently assessing the structural integrity of the cathedral to determine the risk of further collapses. The Manizales Cathedral is a significant architectural symbol of the country, having been rebuilt in concrete and iron following previous fires and seismic activity.
