Manizales implements earthquake recovery aid and new road restrictions
Manizales is implementing recovery measures following the August 10 earthquake. The first 2,200 victims, specifically those whose homes were classified as destroyed or uninhabitable by the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD), have begun receiving economic aid. Additionally, the city has allocated 7.5 billion pesos for the demolition and removal of dangerous structures. The state of public calamity is expected to remain in effect until August 9, 2027.
Simultaneously, new environmental transit restrictions have been established for the Murillo-Manizales road to protect the Los Nevados National Natural Park. Under a resolution from the Ministry of Transport, an environmental ‘pico y placa’ system is now in effect for weekends and holidays, alternating between even and odd license plates. The regulations also impose a 30 km/h speed limit and restrict vehicles with a capacity exceeding 3.4 tons or those transporting more than 19 passengers to reduce ecological impact in the fragile ecosystem.
