Colombia earthquake causes widespread destruction and mass casualties

A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia on August 10, 2026, causing widespread devastation across the region, including cities like Cali and Pereira. The disaster has resulted in at least 289 deaths, 4,187 injuries, and 143 people missing, according to President Abelardo de la Espriella. Approximately 27,000 residential units were destroyed, and over 3,200 schools have sustained damage, severely disrupting education for tens of thousands of children, particularly in impoverished areas like the Chocó department.

Recovery efforts are underway as the government and international organizations respond to the crisis. The United States has pledged approximately $15 million in emergency aid, and singer Shakira has committed $1 million to help rebuild schools in Chocó. In Manizales, authorities are conducting structural assessments of buildings and preparing financial plans for reconstruction, including a potential loan of up to 220 billion pesos.

Political tension has emerged following reports that Housing Minister Jaime Andrés Beltrán was on vacation during the emergency, leading to calls for a motion of no confidence. Meanwhile, search and rescue operations have largely transitioned to recovery efforts as officials focus on long-term reconstruction and humanitarian assistance for the thousands left homeless.
