Karnataka elects Mankal Subba Vaidya and Umashree to legislative leadership roles

The Karnataka Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council have elected new leadership during the current monsoon session. Mankal Subba Vaidya, a Congress MLA from Bhatkal and former minister, was unanimously elected as the Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. His election follows the resignation of Rudrappa Lamani, who vacated the post after being inducted into the cabinet.

Chief Minister DK Shivakumar noted that the Deputy Speaker position is a significant role, citing historical figures who held the post before becoming Chief Ministers. The appointment comes after Vaidya was initially considered for a ministerial role during the recent cabinet expansion.

Simultaneously, Umashree, a senior Congress member and veteran artist, was elected unopposed as the Deputy Chairperson of the Karnataka Legislative Council. She fills the vacancy left by the resignation of a previous incumbent who was reassigned to a different political role. Umashree, a former minister, has a long career in both the arts and politics.
