Manlio Fabio Beltrones warns of fiscal reform needs in Mexico

Senator Manlio Fabio Beltrones has announced his return to legislative activity in the Senate of the Republic in early September following a four-month leave of absence. He stated that the upcoming congressional session will face two critical challenges: fiscal discussion and the deterioration of national institutions.

Beltrones emphasized that Mexico is compelled to pursue either a fiscal reform or a new mechanism to improve tax collection. However, he warned that Congress must remain vigilant to prevent these efforts from becoming a form of ‘fiscal terrorism.’ He argued that the country urgently requires clear rules and better management of public spending, asserting that current spending priorities are misguided.

Highlighting the decline of national infrastructure, Beltrones pointed to the aging state of hospitals, roads, schools, and electrical installations. He specifically cited the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), noting that a lack of investment has led to operational declines and power outages in states such as Sonora and Yucatán, which he claims poses risks to public health and safety.
