Mannheim authorities urge integrated planning for Frankfurt–Mannheim rail line
The Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Neckar (VRN), the Verband Region Rhein-Neckar (VRRN), and the City of Mannheim have issued a joint statement regarding the planned new high-speed rail line between Frankfurt and Mannheim. The partners are urging members of the German Bundestag to ensure the project does not terminate at the northern outskirts of Mannheim.
They argue that a high-capacity transit through the city is essential to prevent additional traffic from overwhelming already heavily burdened existing tracks. The Rhein-Neckar rail hub is a critical junction for national and European passenger and freight traffic, housing Germany’s second-largest marshalling yard and second-largest inland port. Current bottlenecks in the region already cause significant delays and impact rail stability far beyond the local area.
Critics of the current planning point out that the planning corridor for the Frankfurt–Mannheim line currently ends in the Waldhof district of Mannheim, leaving the connection to Karlsruhe to be determined by a separate project. The regional partners emphasize that the entire Rhein-Neckar rail hub must be considered in the planning process from the beginning to avoid exacerbating existing logistical constraints.
