Mannheim Stadtpark-Gesellschaft slaughters Mangalica pigs
The Stadtpark-Gesellschaft has confirmed the slaughter of Mangalica pigs (Wollschweine) in Mannheim’s Herzogenriedpark. The exact number of animals killed remains unknown, and it is unclear if young animals were included.
The decision follows the designation of Mannheim as a restricted zone due to African swine fever since August 2024. This status has limited the ability of the society to rehome or market the animals. Consequently, the population in Herzogenriedpark will be reduced to just three animals, with the Luisenpark also ceasing its keeping of the breed.
The meat from the slaughtered pigs was distributed to employees. The society stated that it did not profit from the process. While one mother pig with offspring was successfully rehomed to a farm, no buyers were found for the remaining animals.
