Mannheim taxi driver awarded rescue medal for halting 2025 amok attack
On 3 March 2025 a driver in Mannheim rammed into the fleeing vehicle of an amok attacker, blocking the car in a dead‑end street. The taxi driver, Muhammad Afzal (also referred to as Muhammad A.), placed his taxi in front of the assailant’s car, preventing further movement. The attacker responded by firing a stun‑gun (Schreckschusswaffe) at the taxi’s windshield and then fled, but police apprehended him shortly thereafter.
The attack had already killed two people and injured fourteen others. The perpetrator, a 40‑year‑old German from Rhineland‑Palatinate, was later sentenced to life imprisonment for double murder and placed in a psychiatric facility.
In recognition of his life‑saving courage, Interior Minister Manuel Hagel of Baden‑Württemberg presented Afzal with the state’s Rescue Medal at a ceremony in Mannheim attended by Mayor Christian Specht. The medal honors individuals who rescue others under extreme personal danger.
