Mannheim Hauptbahnhof unveils memorial for killed conductor Serkan Calar

A memorial plaque has been unveiled at Mannheim Hauptbahnhof to honor Serkan Calar, a 36-year-old Deutsche Bahn conductor killed during a ticket inspection in February 2026. The ceremony was attended by Federal Transport Minister Steffen Bilger, Deutsche Bahn CEO Evelyn Palla, and Calar’s family.

Calar died from a brain hemorrhage following a physical assault by a passenger without a ticket on a regional express train in the Palatinate region. The perpetrator was subsequently sentenced to ten years in prison for bodily harm resulting in death.

The incident sparked a national debate regarding the safety of railway employees in Germany. In response, Deutsche Bahn has implemented several security measures, including the widespread use of bodycams—with over 90 percent of DB Regio staff now trained in their use—as well as testing protective vests, helmets, and a new mobile app for staff assistance. Additionally, the German government is planning stricter criminal penalties for assaults on railway workers.
