Manoj Bajpayee discusses Bollywood social silence and career anecdotes

Actor Manoj Bajpayee recently participated in a discussion with filmmaker and journalist Sanjay Sharma regarding the tendency of Bollywood stars to remain silent on social and political issues affecting the public. Bajpayee questioned the definition of stardom for those who avoid taking stances on real-world matters, noting that while actors often portray revolutionaries on screen, they frequently avoid expressing personal convictions in real life.

During the conversation, Bajpayee emphasized the importance of democracy and the freedom to express dissent, stating that disagreements over ideas should not lead to personal hostility. He also expressed deep respect for veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah, highlighting the need to respect an artist's contributions regardless of differing political opinions.

In a separate anecdote, Bajpayee recounted a past encounter with filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt. He described a first meeting at Bhatt's home where, after being invited for a drink following praise for his work in ‘Swahimaan’, the actor became significantly intoxicated, leading to a humorous recollection of the evening.
