On 8 August 1956 a fire in the Bois du Cazier mine at Marcinelle, Belgium, killed 262 miners, including 136 Italians. The disaster’s 70th anniversary in 2026 is being marked with a series of events in both Belgium and Italy.

In Marcinelle, the Italian workers’ assistance organization Inca and the CGIL trade‑union federation held two‑day initiatives on 7‑8 August, inaugurating the restored monument “Où la lampe passe, le mineur doit passer”, presenting the book *Marcinelle 1956‑2026. Settant’anni tra memoria, diritti e tutela*, and hosting speeches by Italian Consul General Pier Luigi Gentile, Inca president Michele Pagliaro, CGIL secretary‑general Maurizio Landini and other officials.

In Italy, the documentary *Il fiore delle terre nere – Marcinelle 70 anni dopo* premiered in Rome on 6 August and was shown in the town of Manoppello. The Italian government observed the “Giornata del Sacrificio del Lavoro Italiano nel Mondo” on 8 August, with ceremonies in Manoppello, Pesaro, Favara and other municipalities. The commemorations also referenced the 80th anniversary of the 1946 Italy‑Belgium labour agreement known as “Uomini contro carbone”.
