Manos Loïzos: Remembering the influential Greek composer

The legacy of renowned Greek composer Manos Loïzos is commemorated on the anniversary of his death. Loïzos passed away on September 17, 1982, at the age of 45 in a central hospital in Moscow following a series of strokes.

Born in Alexandria, Loïzos moved to Athens in 1958, where he dedicated himself entirely to music after leaving university. His musical career included significant works such as ‘O Stathmos’ (1968) and albums like ‘Nacha Me Ti Nachame’ and ‘Ta Nergika’, the latter of which was banned during the Greek military junta.

Described as a politically engaged artist and a member of the Communist Party of Greece, his compositions became deeply connected to the struggles of the working class and the youth movements from the 1960s through the transition to democracy. His body of work remains a vital part of the Greek musical canon, performed by the country's most prominent singers.
