Mantecorp launches Semavy semaglutide medication in Brazil
Mantecorp, a brand under Hypera Pharma, has launched Semavy, a semaglutide-based medication, in Brazilian pharmacies. The injectable pen, used for type 2 diabetes and weight management, is priced at R$ 333.00 for a 1 mg dose intended for a three-month treatment, offering discounts of up to 67% compared to the reference biological drug.
Semavy utilizes chemical synthesis, a production method that allows for easier scaling and lower manufacturing costs compared to biological versions. Once opened, the pen can be stored at room temperature for up to six weeks without refrigeration. Clinical studies published in 'Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism' indicated that Semavy demonstrated safety and efficacy equivalent to the reference medication in controlling diabetes and reducing weight over a 24-week period.
The arrival of Semavy follows the expiration of the molecule's patent in March, ending the exclusivity previously held by Novo Nordisk's Ozempic in Brazil. Anvisa has also authorized other brands, including Zempneo, Orsema, Seemasun, Owozy, and EMS's Ozivy, signaling increased competition in the Brazilian semaglutide market.
