Mantle8 begins non-invasive hydrogen exploration in Spain’s Pyrenees

French geoscience company Mantle8 has launched a non-invasive scientific exploration programme to investigate natural hydrogen and helium potential across approximately 1,680 square kilometres in Spain’s Pyrenees. The research areas, designated as Aralar I and Aralar II, span parts of Navarra and the Basque Country.

The permits, granted by Spain’s Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, authorize a one-year renewable programme. Mantle8 emphasized that the current authorization is strictly for scientific research and does not permit drilling, industrial extraction, or the construction of permanent infrastructure.

Planned activities include geological mapping, soil-gas analysis, water and rock sampling, and passive seismic monitoring. To minimize environmental impact in the sensitive Aralar massif, the company intends to use small field teams, lightweight equipment, and existing tracks. The company stated that the work will not involve hydraulic fracturing, chemical injections, or freshwater consumption, and will not interfere with local aquifers.
