Mantova faces tourism decline and extreme weather during summer

The province of Mantova experienced a summer marked by significant climatic challenges, affecting both tourism and weather patterns. According to Confcommercio Mantova, tourist flows in the historic center dropped to approximately 233,000 visitors in August, a decrease from 242,000 in July and 290,000 in August of the previous year. Intense heat contributed to this decline and increased operational costs for hospitality providers due to heavy air conditioning usage.

Simultaneously, the region faced extreme electrical activity. Mantova recorded 4,044 cloud-to-ground lightning strikes between June and August, resulting in a density of 6.86 lightning strikes per km² per year. This figure ranks the province third in Lombardy for electrical activity. The most affected municipalities included Borgo Virgilio and San Benedetto Po. These severe weather patterns, including thunderstorms and hail, caused disruptions to transport, electrical networks, and agriculture.
