Manuel Hernandez-Umana detained by ICE after fatal New York Harbor boat capsize

Manuel Ernesto Hernandez-Umana, a 46-year-old Salvadoran national, has been taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following a fatal boat accident in New York Harbor. On August 8, a 21-foot Yamaha AR210 boat, which Hernandez-Umana was piloting near Liberty Island, capsized during a birthday celebration tour.

The accident resulted in the deaths of 27-year-old Sara Sanchez and her 5-month-old daughter, Antonella Garcia. Investigators found the vessel was operating an illegal charter, was not properly licensed, and was carrying 14 passengers, significantly exceeding its 10-person capacity. Authorities also noted a lack of infant-sized life jackets on board.

Following an investigation by the U.S. Coast Guard, it was determined that Hernandez-Umana was in the United States illegally. He reportedly entered through Texas in 2007 and falsely claimed to be a U.S. citizen. He faces federal charges of misconduct and neglect of a ship officer resulting in death, as well as 13 state counts of reckless endangerment. He is currently being held in an ICE detention facility in Elizabeth, New Jersey, and faces deportation after his criminal proceedings conclude.
