National Human Rights Commission re-elects Manuel María Mercedes

Manuel María Mercedes Medina has been re-elected for a three-year term as president of the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) of the Dominican Republic. His reelection occurred during the organization's 39th National Assembly held at the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD).

The assembly was marked by significant tension and controversy. Some delegates, particularly from the eastern region, protested and withdrew from the event, alleging they were denied access and questioning the democratic legitimacy of the process. Reports indicated physical altercations and verbal confrontations among participants before order was restored.

Separately, the RD Debate program hosted a discussion regarding public security and the legal tension between the rights of crime victims and the constitutional rights of the accused. Participants debated the necessity of due process for suspects to ensure legal validity in court, while others, including journalist Ramón Tolentino, advocated for more decisive authority responses toward repeat offenders and criminal groups.
