Manuel Mongini dies after hornet sting; allergist warns of anaphylaxis
Naturalist Manuel Mongini, 74, died in Soriso, province of Novara, after being stung by a hornet. He lost consciousness within minutes as a severe anaphylactic shock set in.
Allergist Antonella Muraro, professor at the University of Padova and coordinator of the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) guidelines, explained that Italy records between five and twenty deaths each year from bee, wasp and hornet stings, averaging about 5.3 fatalities, most of them caused by anaphylaxis. She noted that many fatal cases occur in people without a known allergy history.
Muraro highlighted the main risk groups – older adults, people with heart disease, beekeepers, gardeners and those with mastocytosis or high tryptase – and stressed that anyone can be unaware of an allergy. She advised that a sting limited to pain, redness and swelling can be treated locally, but any signs of systemic reaction such as difficulty breathing, widespread hives, swelling of the lips or throat, or rapid drop in blood pressure require immediate emergency care.
