Manuel Neuer hints at retirement after Bayern Munich victory
Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has suggested that the 2026-27 season may be the final campaign of his professional career. The 40-year-old made these remarks following Bayern's 2-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the German Super Cup.
During the post-match discussions, Neuer indicated that while he intends to focus on enjoying the current season with his team, retirement is a strong possibility. He noted, “I do believe that this can be the last one,” while adding that he prefers not to approach individual matches with a retirement mindset.
The victory also marked a significant milestone for Neuer, as he secured his 36th career trophy, making him the most decorated German footballer in history, surpassing Thomas Müller.
As Neuer enters his 21st Bundesliga season, Bayern Munich is reportedly preparing for a transition period. The club is looking toward 23-year-old Jonas Urbig as a long-term successor, with plans potentially involving a rotation between the two goalkeepers.
