Manuel Neuer to retire in 2027, Bayern Munich eyes successor Jonas Urbig

Germany’s veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has confirmed he will end his playing career in the summer of 2027, aiming to finish with a Champions League title for FC Bayern Munich. The 40‑year‑old indicated his intention during a training camp at Tegernsee after the World Cup break.

Bayern have already identified 22‑year‑old Jonas Urbig as the designated successor. Urbig, who joined the club from 1. FC Köln in January 2025, said he had not been briefed on Neuer’s retirement plans and expressed surprise at the announcement. His contract runs until June 2029, and the club plans to give him gradual exposure to first‑team duties. Bayern officials, including club president Uli Hoeneß, have also hinted that Neuer could remain at the club in a non‑playing advisory role after his retirement.
