Mecklenburg-Vorpommern election: AfD and SPD lead in polls
As the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state election approaches on September 20, political tensions have escalated between SPD Minister-President Manuela Schwesig and AfD candidate Leif-Erik Holm. During a recent televised election forum, the two leaders engaged in a heated debate regarding the Nord Stream 2 pipeline and the parliamentary inquiry into the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Climate Protection Foundation. Schwesig accused the AfD of supporting the inquiry merely to target her, while Holm maintained the investigation was a necessary measure to clarify facts.
Recent polling indicates a highly competitive race. The AfD currently leads with approximately 35 percent support, closely followed by the SPD at 32 percent. The CDU is facing a significant challenge, polling at around 7 to 8 percent, which places the party at risk of failing to meet the 5 percent threshold required to enter the state parliament. Other parties, including Die Linke (11 percent), the Greens (5 percent), and BSW (4 percent), also remain in the race.
In addition to the main leadership contest, local organizations have highlighted queer-political issues, with Die Linke and Volt receiving higher ratings on LGBTQ+ rights compared to the AfD and CDU.
