Manuela Schwesig calls for fuel price caps and excess profit taxes

Manuela Schwesig, Minister-President of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, has called for a short-term price cap on gasoline to alleviate economic pressure on workers and small businesses. Schwesig suggested financing this measure through an 'excess profits tax' on energy corporations, citing Luxembourg as a model. She argued that such a tax would prevent corporations from profiting at the expense of the middle class and expressed support for similar positions held by SPD leader Lars Klingbeil.

In a separate development, the SPD is implementing a comprehensive austerity program due to a yearly deficit of approximately five million euros in state party funding. This financial shortfall, driven by poor election results and declining membership, has led to plans to reduce staff at the Willy-Brandt-Haus from 171 to fewer than 150 full-time positions by 2030. The party also intends to modernize its IT infrastructure and organizational structures.

Schwesig also criticized the federal government's reform pace, particularly regarding healthcare, nursing, and pensions. She warned that the perception that the government is 'arguing instead of helping' is contributing to the rising popularity of the AfD.
