Manuela Schwesig faces calls to clarify political focus ahead of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern election

As the state election in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern approaches on September 20, political tensions are rising regarding the leadership and focus of the SPD. Claudia Müller, the Green Party's top candidate for the state, has called on Minister-President Manuela Schwesig to clarify whether she intends to run for the federal SPD chairmanship or remain focused on her role in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Müller argued that Schwesig's campaign slogan, “Decision for MV,” requires a clear commitment to the state to ensure the role of Minister-President is not treated as a “part-time job.” The SPD's state general secretary, Julian Barlen, dismissed these calls as “absurd,” stating that Schwesig has repeatedly affirmed her intention to focus on her current office and protect the state from the AfD.

Currently, polling shows the AfD leading in the region, with the SPD in second place. However, Schwesig has demonstrated a capacity for significant late-campaign surges, similar to the SPD's performance in the 2021 election when they rose from 23 percent to nearly 40 percent in the polls.
