Manuela Schwesig re‑elected SPD Spitzenkandidatin in Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern

At the SPD Landesparteitag in Wismar, Ministerpräsidentin Manuela Schwesig was overwhelmingly confirmed as the party’s lead candidate for the upcoming state election on 20 September. She received 90 of 91 votes, equating to 98.9 % support. The congress also adopted the party’s election programme, pledging measures such as a state development bank, interest‑free loans for young drivers, and new student housing.

Schwesig, who has led the state since 2017 and heads a red‑red coalition with The Left, faces poll figures that place the SPD at roughly 23‑27 % while the AfD leads with 34‑37 %. The Greens criticised the state government’s stance in the Bundesrat on stricter heating‑system regulations, arguing it contradicts Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern’s own climate‑compatibility law. Former Ministerpräsident Erwin Sellering publicly voiced support for Schwesig despite past differences.

The SPD presents the election as a “directional decision” between a continued SPD‑led government and a potential AfD majority, emphasizing stability and social cohesion.
