Manufacturers Association of Nigeria seeks tax reforms and protection from illegal levies
The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) is calling for urgent reforms to combat multiple taxation and illegal levies affecting industrial operations. During the 55th Annual General Meeting of the MAN Apapa Branch, President Francis Meshioye highlighted that manufacturers in trade corridors like Apapa, Amuwo-Odofin, and Kirikiri are burdened by overlapping charges from various government agencies and non-state actors.
To address these challenges, MAN has proposed several safeguards in relation to the upcoming 2025 Tax Law. These include the implementation of a harmonized tax code in Lagos State featuring a single assessment authority and a unified payment portal to reduce compliance costs. Additionally, the association is advocating for the declaration of 'No-Tout Zones' in key industrial areas to curb extortion by non-state actors.
Further recommendations include the creation of a single bill for port-related charges through collaboration between the Lagos State Government, the Nigerian Ports Authority, and the Shippers’ Council. MAN also suggested the establishment of an Apapa Trade Corridor Authority to coordinate security, road maintenance, and regulation across the region to improve the operating environment for manufacturers.
