Manufacturing sector shows strong expansion amid rising costs
The manufacturing sector has experienced a significant surge in activity, with S&P Global’s flash manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) rising to 56.0. This marks a 53-month high, signaling a strong pace of industrial expansion and improved business conditions.
However, this growth coincides with rising input prices. The Institute for Supply Management reported that while new orders and backlogs are increasing, the Prices Index has jumped to 77.9. Raw material prices have seen increases for 24 consecutive months across the six largest manufacturing industries.
This combination of rising orders and rising costs can create cash-flow challenges. Manufacturers often face ‘Order Cash Exposure,’ where they must finance raw materials, labor, and freight before customer payments are received, potentially leading to liquidity shortages despite increased profitability.
