Manufacturing technology advances in AI-driven design and machining

New research published in Manufacturing Review introduces a hybrid AI approach to accelerate the design of metal ceramic mould materials (CMMs). By combining an immune genetic algorithm with a backpropagation neural network, researchers led by Yang Jing from Zibo Vocational Institute have optimized material properties such as fracture toughness, hardness, and flexural strength.

This method significantly reduces the trial-and-error experimentation typically required in industries like aerospace, automotive, and electronics. The study indicates that optimal performance can be achieved in approximately nine to ten iterations, with high predictive accuracy for material properties. This advancement could lead to substantial cost savings and streamlined production timelines for high-tech manufacturing sectors.

In broader manufacturing developments, recent industry highlights include advancements in metal additive manufacturing by DMG MORI, the use of carbon fibre in five-axis machine construction by TOPNC, and the integration of robotic machining through partnerships between Siemens, Güdel, and CNC Design.
