Manuka Honey wins the Ellis Park Debutante Stakes
Manuka Honey, the odds-on favorite, won the $250,000 Ellis Park Debutante Stakes on Sunday at Ellis Park. Ridden by Luis Sáez and trained by Brian Lynch, the two-year-old filly secured her first black-type victory in the seven-furlong race.
During the race, Manuka Honey settled a few lengths behind early leaders Sweet Mary and Glory Run. After the backstretch, she swung to the outside, took the lead on the stretch, and pulled away to finish with a time of 1:23.15.
For the Win, trained by George Weaver and ridden by Axel Concepción, finished second. Cardio Cat, ridden by Erik Asmussen, took third place. The event was part of a six-stakes Ellis Park Derby day card valued at $1.5 million.
