Manusmriti's role in caste and gender hierarchy in India

The Manusmriti, an ancient legal text, serves as a central point of contention regarding social hierarchy, caste, and gender equality in India. The text establishes a patriarchal framework that mandates lifelong male guardianship for women, asserting that women are not fit for independence and must be controlled by fathers, husbands, or sons. It further links the control of female sexuality to the maintenance of caste purity and the varna system.

Dr. B. R. Ambedkar historically critiqued the Manusmriti as the foundational document for Brahmanical social inequality. In a symbolic act of protest during the 1927 Mahad Satyagraha, Ambedkar led the public burning of the text to reject the graded inequality and the denial of human rights it codified.

Modern historical analysis highlights the tension between these traditional hierarchies and the democratic values enshrined in the Indian Constitution. While figures like Ambedkar, Gandhi, and various social reformers worked toward equal citizenship and women's empowerment, opposition to these democratizing processes has historically been represented by organizations such as the RSS.
