Manzanillo port expansion awaits environmental impact assessment

The expansion project for the Port of Manzanillo in the Cuyutlán Lagoon remains environmentally undefined. Alicia Bárcena, Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT), stated that the Environmental Impact Assessment (MIA) has not yet been concluded.

SEMARNAT is currently reviewing a modification to the initial document. The agency is working in coordination with the Secretariat of the Navy and the University of Colima, the institution responsible for drafting the assessment. The process aims to ensure the study includes necessary protections for the Cuyutlán Lagoon, a wetland area containing mangroves and other ecologically significant ecosystems.

Authorities are also working on establishing a protected zone behind the port to accompany the infrastructure development. The expansion remains subject to the final evaluation of environmental impacts once the revised MIA is submitted and reviewed.
