Mali President pardons French intelligence agent Yann Vezilier
Mali's transitional president, General Assimi Goita, has granted a presidential pardon to Yann Vezilier, a French intelligence agent. Vezilier had been sentenced to 20 years in prison in June for undermining state security. The Malian government stated that the pardon does not call into question the established facts of the conviction or the fairness of the trial, but it does require his immediate departure from the country.
Vezilier was arrested in August 2025 alongside several Malian officers accused of plotting a coup. While Mali maintains that the agent was involved in a destabilization operation, the French foreign ministry has consistently denied these claims, asserting that Vezilier was conducting a security cooperation mission.
The decision is seen as a potential gesture toward easing the severe diplomatic tensions between Mali and France, which have escalated since the military junta took power. The Malian government also noted that the assistance of an unnamed 'brotherly country' helped facilitate the pardon.
