The Kolkata Police Special Task Force has arrested Asim Mandal, a high-ranking CPI (Maoist) leader also known by the aliases Akash, Timir, and Manoj. The arrest took place in the Patashpur area of the East Midnapore district.

Mandal, who served as a member of the CPI (Maoist) Central Committee and Secretary of the West Bengal State Committee-I, had been evading law enforcement for more than 15 years. He was reportedly operating across the forested regions of West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Odisha. Authorities placed a bounty on his head ranging from 1 crore to 2.2 crore rupees.

During the operation, police recovered two bags from Mandal containing Maoist literature, books, and electronic communication equipment. West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari commended the Special Task Force for the breakthrough, stating that the government would not tolerate any attempts to revive 'Red Terror' within the state.
