Maple Leafs GM John Chayka rules out trade for forward Matthew Knies

Toronto Maple Leafs general manager John Chayka addressed persistent trade speculation surrounding forward Matthew Knies during a media Zoom call. He said that moving a young, top‑tier player like Knies would be a "very high bar to clear" and is unlikely, noting the team’s focus on other roster needs, particularly the centre position.

Knies is under a six‑year, $46.5 million contract that runs through 2031, with an average annual value of about $7.75 million. He posted a breakout season with 66 points (23 goals, 43 assists) in 79 games last year. While other NHL clubs remain skeptical about how eager Toronto is to trade him, the organization indicated no immediate plan to part with the player.

Chayka emphasized that the speculation generates interest but does not align with the Leafs’ current strategy, which aims to improve the roster without sacrificing a rare, contract‑controlled asset.
