Maple Ridge bear attack: Search continues for aggressive black bear

Authorities in Maple Ridge are continuing to search for an adult black bear that attacked a three-year-old girl on a residential property on August 9. The child, Anaiyah, was playing on a deck when the encounter occurred. A parent intervened to chase the bear away, and the girl was airlifted to BC Children’s Hospital, where she is recovering from non-life-altering injuries.

Maple Ridge RCMP reported that the bear returned to the area multiple times following the attack. Officers discharged a firearm in an attempt to protect public safety, striking a bear that then fled into a wooded area. However, a necropsy performed by BC Conservation Officers determined that the bear killed by the RCMP was not the offending animal responsible for the attack.

BC Conservation Officers are currently testing DNA samples collected from the scene. Meanwhile, a GoFundMe fundraiser has been established to support the victim's parents, Andrea Lekei and Bradley Farnum, to assist with costs while they care for their daughter.
