Maple Ridge RCMP warns of counterfeit $50 and $100 bills
The Maple Ridge RCMP has reported at least eight instances of counterfeit Canadian currency circulating within the community over the past month. The fraudulent notes involve $50 and $100 denominations and have been used at various local businesses.
While most businesses successfully identified the fake currency and reported it to authorities, some establishments have suffered direct financial losses. Police have issued a warning that businesses cannot be reimbursed for losses if they unknowingly accept counterfeit money as legal tender.
Frontline Sergeant Daniel Rettenbacher advised business owners to ensure staff are trained to identify security features and follow strict cash-handling protocols. Customers are also encouraged to exercise due diligence when handling or depositing currency. It remains a criminal offense to knowingly possess or use counterfeit money.
